Is State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition Any Good?

State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition is a third-person, open-world zombie game, with survival elements. You must raid the surrounding landscape, gathering supplies, growing your camp, and managing your survival capabilities. Completing various main story and side missions is also on the to-do list; there are plenty of folk that need helping and you need to work out just what the local military detachment are up to.

You are not one person in State Of Decay, but a community of survivors, and everyone must chip in to ensure the success of the camp. You can freely swap between members and take them out on the road to battle the undead and make supply runs; using survivors also improves their skills, making them better teammates. However, people can get sick, suffer fatigue, and can even die, which means you need to constantly juggle survivors and have the right facilities at your camp in order to keep people happy, healthy, and effective.

What Are People Saying?

State Of Decay turns 10-years-old this coming summer, and in that time the game has achieved near perfect scores. It's nice to see that the game's age and rough edges haven't hindered its playability over the years. Modders are even hard at work creating extra content, which is available to download from Nexus.

In fact this game has done so well over the years that a sequel, State Of Decay 2, followed some years later.

Is It Actually Any Good?

Yes, yes it is. The reviews speak for themselves; it's a great game! It has a couple of issues, such as no multiplayer — something that truly hinders the game — and its visuals are really beginning to show their age. Apart from those, though, there really are no downsides. The play area is large, but not absurdly so; the characters are varied and creative; and the survival elements are well balanced, giving the player enough to help them progress, but never allowing them to become overpowered.
