Super Rare Games Interview

Super Rare Games Interview

We recently had the opportunity to ask PR & communications manager Ryan Brown a few questions about Super Rare Games, a Switch focused limited print publisher.

GameGrin:

Could you give our readers a brief overview of Super Rare Games, and your role at the company.

Ryan Brown:

Sure! Super Rare Games publishes a rare print physical release of an indie game for the Nintendo Switch once a month, every month. We've released games like Snake Pass, Human: Fall Flat, World of Goo, The Gardens Between, and pleeeenty more in lovely physical packages.

As for me, I'm the very new Head of Saying Stuff - yes, that's my real title! It's basically my job to communicate our new releases to people, so if you see any tweets, newsletters, or press releases, chances are that's little ol' me.

GameGrin:

How does SRG differentiate itself from other limited release publishers?

Ryan:

One of our biggest selling points is that as soon as a game is announced, we already have it in stock, ready to ship. So if you see a new reveal from us, you know that you'll be able to have it in your hands to play incredibly soon.

Of course, our games selection is absolutely top notch, there's lots of extra collectables and goodies in many of our releases, and we're incredibly in tune with our community.

GameGrin:

How are games chosen to be given physical releases?

Ryan:

Our personal biases definitely play a part! We all have our personal wishlists, and sometimes it really just is that simple.

We take note of new indie releases, fan demand, pitches, and just generally what makes sense for us as a business and our developer partners.

GameGrin:

What benefits does a physical release bring for an indie developer?

Ryan:

The easiest answer is that it's a quick, easy, assured cash boost, especially for a title where digital sales have slowed that, and that we handle all of the work.

Most developers are as keen as we are to have their games on a physical Switch cartridge though! I think it's something every aspiring game developer grew up dreaming of.

GameGrin:

Has the current COVID-19 pandemic affected any SRG releases this year?

Ryan:

We've not been hit on a production level so far, but of course our shipping teams are having to socially distance and the postal service is struggling, so there have been some shipping delays. Even with that, we've been extremely lucky.

GameGrin:

Will there be an increase in collector's editions for future SRG releases?

Ryan:

The form each release takes is really judged on a case-by-case basis, so I can't say whether we'll be increasing necessarily, but there'll certainly be more in the future.

LRG Tricky Towers

GameGrin:

What physical goodies would you like to include in future SRG collector's editions?

Ryan:

I'm just speaking from a personal angle here, but anything displayable has always been my favourite extra goodies.

GameGrin:

SRG are currently focused on Switch only. Is there a chance this will change with the release of next gen consoles?

Ryan:

We're very focused on the Nintendo Switch at the moment - we love collecting for the platform ourselves and we've built up a really strong base of Switch collectors. But never say never!

GameGrin:

Do you have a personal favourite SRG release?

Ryan:

Absolutely! Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime was at the top of my physical wishlist before Super Rare released it, so I'd probably say that one!

GameGrin:

Any hints you can give for future SRG releases?

Ryan:

I'm going to gracefully say it'll be a bit tricky for me to hint anything right now, but I have a feeling everyone is going to dig what we have coming up, so stay tuned to our Twitter @SuperRareGames!
