Top Indie Games Coming Out in March 2022

Welcome to Top 10 Indie Games Coming Out in March! retrogamergirl here, somehow we’ve already gotten to March! But the good news is there are a ton of awesome-looking indie titles that my friend Artura Dawn and I have found that we think you need to make sure to check out! These titles match the quality of their AAA competitors and I am so excited to check them out; there are so many that look amazing here! Plus they won’t empty your wallet!

Like last month, this article is separate from our monthly Top 10 Games Coming Out in March because at GameGrin we absolutely love indie companies and titles. The indie titles listed here will not be on that other list so make sure that you check out both!

Hero’s Hour

1st of March

Hero Hour

The first title on my list to be released is Hero’s Hour. This is a turn-based strategy RPG that has real-time combat, with adorable mini 8-bit characters. You command large armies as you travel across the land, and even on the water in your ship, to conquer the enemy on the procedurally generated maps.

With 10 factions and tons of different types of heroes, there will be so many ways to customise your own forces! I absolutely love watching the adorable little knights attacking the huge variety of enemies. I am so excited to sink myself into this game and check out all the skills and cool-looking spells available to your mini-warrior!

Instruments of Destruction

2nd of March

Instruments

Need a game to play when you are feeling stressed out? Instruments of Destruction is a vehicle-based sandbox game where you control construction vehicles that you create yourself and smash. This title is physics-based, so in theory, if you were to smash buildings in this way, this is how they would fall! Take out all your frustrations and destroy everything! It will be guaranteed to make you feel better.

Being able to create your own vehicle adds a ton of replayability since you will be able to see what additions to your creation will be useful for smashing, or which look cool but suck in practice. You know Instruments of Destructions will be a cool title when it even has its own theme song!

Have a Nice Death

8th of March

Have a Nice Death

Looks like I'm going to have to give up a ton of sleep in March to play all these games. Have a Nice Death has you playing as Death. He is overworked and desperately needs a holiday! But he realises that his employees suck at their job and are going crazy ruining the whole life-death balance. So he has to delay his trip and restore order, all the while teaching his employees who is really the boss.

This 2D action roguelike game looks gorgeous sporting mostly monotone visuals with a few punches of colour. The character of Death looks so cute and evil at the same time, almost like an angry Funko-pop. I can’t wait to pick up my in-game scythe and prove why Death is the boss! This is going to be awesome!

This one looks absolutely breathtaking, I cannot wait for it to come out! - Artura

ANNO: Mutationem

17th of March

ANNO Mutationagem

This is an action-adventure RPG set in a cyberpunk world with a mix of 2D pixelated graphics and 3D art. It sounds like a crazy mix, but add in a super cool-looking female protagonist and you have piqued my interest. The game promises that the game has a “rich, dark, and bizarre plot” so this definitely seems like it will be a unique experience that I want to be a part of.

I love the anime artwork that is shown in the trailer, mixed with the glowing neon lights in the city. This game promises to be a beautiful experience; ANNO: Mutationem definitely has a cyberpunk world that I want to learn more about.

I was going to put this one in my list too! - Artura

Jitsu Squad

29th of March

Jitsu Squad

This side scrolling beat ‘em up game looks like you blended Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Battletoads but replaced them with new crazy characters including a boar, rabbit, and raccoon! The art style is great with a cartoony hand-drawn look to the characters and environments, with tons of vibrant and bright colours. The action looks frantic and super high-energy that is neverending; there doesn’t seem to be a slow point in the action.

You have the option to play with up to four players, so this will definitely be a great multiplayer experience. I can’t wait to get to the level where you have to surf, it totally reminds me of being on the speed bike in the original Battletoads game on the NES. It was so difficult to pass, but incredibly memorable!

I was shocked to see that Yooka and Laylee are teaming up and will also be playable in the game. It’s not hard to see why this Kickstarter was so successful!

Those are the five indie titles that I am super excited about coming in March. Since my birthday is in the middle of the month, maybe I’ll be lucky enough to receive one of these titles as a gift! Now Artura gets to make the hard decisions and pick her top five!

Artura Dawn

Artura Slashes Into Action2

Thank you so much, retro! It's funny that you'd say it's my turn to make the arduous decision to pick. I've come to appreciate how easy I had it last month; I researched for well over 10 hours, ended up with over 50 titles, and had to narrow that down to a measly five. Safe to say, my head is spinning with titles, dates, genres... My wallet begged me to stop looking, but after having almost 10 games once I'd finished with the 1st of March releases, I knew there were great things on the horizon. Here are my top five indie games coming out next month!

What Lies in the Multiverse

4th of March

What Lies in the Multiverse

While we all anxiously await the arrival of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, we can enjoy another portrayal of the multiverse with What Lies in the Multiverse, a story-driven puzzle platformer in which players will harness the power to travel between dimensions to solve.

And why wouldn’t we enjoy it? for its gorgeous pixel graphics, captivating description, and enticing story, then certainly for the characters; namely Everett in all of his genius, narcissistic, compulsive glory. When the multiverse is involved, not everything is what it seems.

I love the mechanic of switching universes to get past obstacles in the current one! -retro

Wunderling DX

9th of March

Wunderling

Heroes? Pah, overrated schmucks, the lot of them. It's supervillains where it's at. How awesome would it be to play as a supervillain…? Okay, now what about the supervillain's grunt? That's right, in Wunderling, you'll get to play as a glorified Goomba.

Now, I know that Wunderling isn't exactly new, as its original release date was on the 5th of March 2020; however, Wunderling DX will feature brand-new things that aren't available in the original, including new levels. As such, anyone who dreams of playing a character that can't stop walking (like a Goomba) should look forward to it.

Ever since I was a child I wanted to be able to play as the little baddie going after the hero! -retro

KARM

21st of March

KARM

Okay, who doesn't love retro-style shooters? After my preview for KUR, I was left itching for so much more. Enter KARM (okay, what is it with retro shooters and the full caps? (KUR, KARM, DOOM...), a 90s-style FPS with 30 different episodes to play through and seven weapons from the 19th century to choose from.

Bloody, gory, and filled to the brim with action, KARM will put the player in the shoes of a protagonist slaying a bunch of cultists that are trying to protect a creature from beyond that wishes for no more than chaos and destruction.

FORWARD: Escape the Fold

30th of March

FORWARD

I've been loving my time with card games recently after having avoided them like the plague before I played Legends of Runeterra. Ever since then, I've picked up games such as Slay the Spire, tested out Ring of Pain in my Humble Choice overview, and even delved into some obscure ones like 月圆之夜 (Night of Full Moon). Now, March has blessed me with a brand-new title to look forward (get it?) to — FORWARD: Escape the Fold.

Select from seven different champions as you progress forward from a choice of three cards; one wrong move and the run is over. I'm truly fascinated by the gameplay and the looks of the game, and I cannot wait to get my hands on it.

Coromon

31st of March

Coromon

Much like my parents, I shouldn't have a favourite from the list, but I do: Coromon.

If the "-mon" suffix didn't give it away, Coromon is a creature collector much akin to the Pokémon franchise. If you didn't (or couldn't) get your hands on Pokémon Legends: Arceus, you can scratch that undying itch with Coromon. Fully customisable, over 100 creatures to tame, and graphics that had me sobbing the moment I saw them, this one is easily the one I'm looking forward to the most.

Honourable Mentions

Sometimes, it's way too hard to choose only five games that you love and are excited about. So instead, we have the honourable mentions category to ensure that no game goes without the love it deserves! I — unfortunately — can't cram the 50 titles I am anticipating here, but I can at least ensure some of them get noticed!

A World of Little Legends (1st of March) – An open-world, crafting, sandbox game where you play as an elf, with graphics and vibes reminiscent of Stardew Valley? I'm in.

AI Roguelite (2nd of March) – A text-based adventure where you give keywords to an AI and it builds an entire story, causing reactions based on the descriptors it generates. If done properly, this is sure to be a masterpiece!

Indies' Lies (24th of March) – Another roguelike deck-building game, featuring nine playable characters and stunning visuals along with a partner system. I only didn't add this one because I already had a roguelike deck-building game in the assortment.

Kingdom Gun (25th of March) – Action roguelikes are great, especially when I can play them with my wife. And the graphics on this one? Wonderfully built pixel graphics. Definitely looking forward to it!

Wow, this has been thus far the hardest month in relation to choosing some of the best games. As retro mentioned above, make sure you check out our other article, where we allow AAA titles to take a stab at winning a mention in the article!
