Staff Blog - 3-D-YES

I love my 3DS. Handheld gaming never really did anything for me in terms of longevity because I got bored too easily. The same games, overplayed until I get them to the point that they don't become interesting anymore. However, once I got my 3DS as a gift for Christmas, I haven't been more than 10 feet from it since I first charged it up.

The user functionality is what really stands out for me. Streetpass is revolutionary; and for those of you that don't know what Streetpass is, it allows all 3DS users in a certain range to connect with each other, swapping profiles and game data to collect Mii items, puzzle pieces and various game collectibles for use in your retail purchased titles. The addition, you can collect game coins for use in Nintendo built-in titles by taking advantage of the pedometer - it's not going to get people off their sofas to make some fictional money, but it does aid in getting the StreetPasses. The more you walk with it, the more coins you earn and if you are out in public, you find more people; a genius cycle.

The glasses-free 3D is genuinely revolutionary and in no way a gimmick. You do need to be at an optimal distance away from the screen to really appreciate it but after I found my sweet-spot I had no issues trying to repeatedly adjust to viewing perspective. Games feel polished too, they aren't hashed, rush-out 3D versions of previous console/handheld titles, they are single entities themselves and many stand-out on the market, especially the Mario games, naturally.

The Vita has just been released but there isn't a whole-lot on or in it that really catches my attention, nothing that really screams "Buy me!" except for it being the newest, shiniest thing on the gaming market.. I'd rather hold-off a few more months to see how the retail releases go before making a serious thought about it.

Don't get me wrong, I like how there's a 3G version, it has dual analogue sticks and the graphics look incredible but at present, it's not even something I would consider asking someone for as a gift, purely due to them possibly wasting money if the overall sales go down the pooper. I'm not saying it's going to be another Gizmodo in comparison to the 3DS but Sony will have to make something decent of it before it tingles my personal taste buds.

Before the 3DS, I used to think pure hand-held gaming consoles were on a steep decline but that was before I got to experience all the features the product had to offer. If the hand-held market continues to evolve in the direction similar to multi-user, voluntary communication as well as the addition of 3G in the Vita, then there will always be a place in the market for the on-the-go gamer, not just iGames, diluted to a bland touchscreen experience.

3DS

I love my 3DS. Then again, I love my PSP too.

I spend an hour and a half each day on public transport going to and from work so it is a good chance to get a bit of portable gaming in.

I feel the same about my 3DS in many ways. It's a lovely bit of kit with some top quality titles. Mario 3D Land is my current game on the go and it's a gem of a title.

I am, however, excited about the vita. It looks an amazing piece of hardware and with Uncharted ad Wipeout as flagship titles it has as good a starting chance as one could cope.

That said, I'll be waiting a couple of months before I get my hands on one - for reasons more related to affordability than desire.

I was interested in the vita for quite some time.. I had a chance to experience the vita today, and only problem I have with it is the control sticks... They seem to be somewhat flimsy to me... I would definitely consider buying one if I don't see anyone complaining about it...

I really like my portable gaming, had one of each itteration of the Gameboy so far except for the 3DS, something I want to change!

Ive spent many happy hours playing games such as the pokemon series, Golden Sun series, Final Fantasty Tactics etc I could go on for ages. Ive had a quick bash at the 3DS and loved the screen, played Super Street Figher IV on it and it was epic!

Good blog Ginge Although damn you for making me realise how much I want one!

Loving Mario 3D atm, got to world 4 now with all the stars

He got alllll the stars.

I love both the Mario Games, looking forward to the new Luigi's Mansion that is being released and also Tekken too.

@Ewok - As much as I love the fact it has great launch titles, it's not something that would sway it for me to start with. Is there anything else you think I might like on the Vita for me to go out and get one?

@HolySlayer - That's also a big issue for me, as much as I love the 3DS, the addition pad you can get to pop on the side of the console to aid play in Resident Evil: Revelations looks ridiculous. However, I'm not yet to try either so I can't really pass judgement on them yet.

I could be wrong, and I'm so clogged up with mucus that the idea of checking sources is so unwelcome that I'm putting my hand in a vice, but I'm pretty sure the DS has consistently been one of, if not the top selling console for the last few years..?

/edit

Wikipedia says it's sold 151 million. Over double what the 360 has sold.

How long ago was the DS released? Also, how many sales did the 3DS make in the first month in comparison to the DS?

Will be interesting to see how well the sales go of the Vita in this country, because of course Japan buy everything.

Hopefully the launch titles are indicative of the level of developer support - if game releases continue along that strength it can only be a good thing.

What makes me want the system is the combination of the sheer power under the hood and the dual analog control set up. If supported properly that paves the way for some good, polished FPS and TPS titles - which I love but are sadly under-represented in the hand held market.

We'll see though. The hardware definitely seems sound - so it's the post release software support that will make or break the system as a viable market contender

You are very right Ewok. If this does take off then it could be considered as the hardcore handheld system.

I think the only way they can achieve this is buy making it, I hate to say, social gaming intuitive too. That is where a lot of the market is going at the moment.

Hardcore games with the addition of user connectability similar to the 3DS would be a winning combination in my eyes.

Yeah, I do Like The 3DS, I'm Finding Sonic Generations good. Super Monkey Ball Is Good, but One of the Movement Options Is to Tilt the Screen, Which is Hard to Control AND Ruins the 3Dness of it
