E3 2012: Pikmin 3 Detailed

Legendary game director, Shigeru Miyamoto, was first on stage at this year's Nintendo conference at E3 to introduce us to Pikmin 3, an upcoming title for Nintendo’s Wii U system.

It has been 10 years since the release of the first Pikmin game on the GameCube and Miyamoto explained to us that one of the the most difficult areas in developing the game was managing the camera zoom so that it was far enough away to see the map but close enough to see the Pikmin clearly. He assured us that the enhanced resolution of the Wii U platform will make this problem a thing of the past and allow management of swarms of up to 100 Pikmin, each of which will be individually displayed.

While watching some gameplay footage we were introduced to a new type of Pikmin, the Rock Pikmin. This new addition to the swarm can be thrown at heard objects to break through them and can be precisely aimed at specific targets. We also saw footage of the Pikmin gathering materials to build a bridge.

The game’s basic controls will use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk and the “simple, intuitive controls” will make it possible the throw a Pikmin with precise aim, for example at a monster's eye.

The Wii U Gamepad tablet is also available as a method of control. The integrated screen of the Wii U Gamepad will display the map and the player can use touch screen controls to quickly scroll the map and more effectively place their Pikmin.

The game will expand on the number of ‘Leaders’ available with up to 4 being used simultaneously, offering deeper tactics and enhanced strategy over previous titles.  The Wii U Gamepad will enable the player to check the status of their Leaders at a glance and quickly switch between them.

Miyamoto announced that the game’s ‘challenge’ mode, in which players must attempt to gather as much fruit as possible and features post-game replays, will be available on the E3 show floor.
