R.I.P. Social Life - Elder Scrolls Online Is Official

The moment that many gamers have been waiting for (and even more gamer spouses have been dreading) is finally looming on the horizon, as Bethesda Softworks today confirmed that an MMO set within their much loved Elder Scrolls franchise was in development.

Little information has been released as yet - continuing to buck the trend of declining sales of gaming print media, Game Informer score yet another exclusive for their forthcoming issue, so we can expect snippets of information to start hitting the internet in the coming weeks.

In their announcement article, Game Informer tease us with a handful of snippets of information:

  • the game will be set a millenium before the events of the latest Elder Scrolls title, Skyrim.
  • for the first time in an Elder Scrolls game, all of Tamriel will feature.
  • they hint at the possibility of open-world PvP in order to control the province of Cyrodiil, the setting for Oblivion.

The game will be the first to be released from Zenimax's MMO team, Zenimax Online Studios.

We have been working hard to create an online world in which players will be able to experience the epic Elder Scrolls universe with their friends, something fans have long said they wanted. It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years. The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise.
Matt Firor, game director of The Elder Scrolls Online.

The project is likely to be watched closely even by those outside of the Elder Scrolls community; with Bethesda recently acquiring the rights to a potential Fallout MMO, Zenimax Online Studios would be the most logical choice of developer to finally bring the title to fruition.

For the time being though, the focus remains on The Elder Scrolls Online; the first teaser trailer is due tomorrow, giving us the whole weekend to drool and fantasize about the possibilities ahead.

Balls to this! I fell for that with Star Wars.

Eh, if all of Tamriel is in it, if I get it I'll probably spend all of my time in Morrowind...
