E3 - 2013 Coverage: Ryse: Son of Rome Revealed

Earlier we saw the newest brainchild from Crytek, Ryse: Son of Rome where, you guessed it, you’re a robot. No, a roman soldier. Sorry, I always get those mixed up.

You play as the commander of a Roman army, a Legionnaire, Marius Titas. We were shown Marius ordering his men off of a ship and onto a beach only to have them struck down after a somewhat inspiring speech. He gathers the rest of his men and ‘turtles’ up the beach, reflecting arrows with their shields.

Once inside the walls of the keep, the shields come down and the swords unsheathe. Combat consisted of button combinations, as you would expect, but could also trigger mini-cutscenes with quicktime mechanics showing how Marius Titas brutally murders his foes. From what we saw, it looked a bit clunky and not quite as smooth as we might as expect but nowhere near bad. Cut to the battle unfolding before our protagonists eyes and we see his soldiers charging another entrance of the keep.

We then hear from Cevat Yerli, founder of Crytek and he tells us how Ryse: Son of Rome will be running the newest edition of the Cryteck engine, be available exclusively on Xbox One and launch alongside the console in November.
