The Elder Scrolls Online subscription cost

Zenimax are officially going the subscription route with The Elder Scrolls Online. The decision has been heavily criticised by the gaming community as many current MMOs are subscription free.

Of course not all are free-to-play, World of Warcraft remains one of the most popular MMO games and also charges its players a monthly fee to enjoy. Many other recent MMO releases, like The Secret World and Star Wars: The Old Republic, to name a couple have started out with a fee but failed to take off and ended up becoming free-to-play.

Zenimax have stated that their decision is in the best interests of the players. Not only does the fee help to pay for additional content for the game, and for that to be high-quality, supported content, but also it stops in-game microtransactions from ruining the experience of being lost in Tamriel. Rather than having an pay-to-win type system, players pay the monthly fee and just enjoy their time in the game.

The fee will be $14.99/£8.99 a month which is the same as World of Warcraft and will no doubt offer a similar system where you receive a discount for subscribing for a set amount of time.

Not sure what this is in sterling, but I heard it's a $60 up-front fee, carried on by a $15 a month subscription.

I was interested, too. Was.

Well, that kills any intention I had of getting/playing this.

As a WoW subscriber since day of release I've no issue paying for a monthly game that I know I will be receiving the entertainment value of. Given I loved all of the lore behind the Elder Scrolls series, and being a recent addict of Skyrim I'm rather looking forward to this MMO version.

However, I don't think I'll be jumping straight into playing it - I'll probably give it a month or so to settle then go from there.

Def still gonna try it.

I really hope they change their minds about this, or lower the price.
Its going to put people off, which in return will put people like me off from paying a monthly fee to an MMO which is quite.

People don't want to play a MMO because they have to pay for it? wut?
