Check Out Curse of the Dead Gods' First Accursed Update

Passtech Games is no slouch. The studio's roguelite dungeon crawler, Curse of the Dead Gods, released on Steam Early Access a little over month ago, and already the game's first major update is live and waiting to be downloaded. The Cursed Temple update is out now for Curse of the Dead Gods on PC.

Check out the overview trailer above, in which Focus Home Interactive's Creative Producer walks viewers through the update's major additions. In addition, the full patch notes can be found here. Pressed for time and need the update info now? Not to fear; I've picked out the highlights:

Eight Eternal Cursed Game Modes

Brand new to this update, Eternal Cursed game modes are unlockable gameplay modifiers intended to spice up (and usually add some difficulty) to the typical run. Movement speed might be increased at the cost of enemy corpses spawning further foes; being in the light might make a player more vulnerable to damage and vice versa for being shrouded in darkness. These are just a couple of the eight modes included within the update, with more promised in the future.

Ten New Curses

Unlike the cursed game modes, these curses are picked up throughout a run, offering afflictions that initially seem detrimental to the player. However, with enough skill and cunning, they can be turned around into an advantage. In the trailer, the "Trapped Chests" curse is outlined. Opening any chest with the curse will lead to a harmful blow being directed towards the player—bad, right? If the player can parry the harmful blow, however, they'll receive a greater reward from the chest itself. This is just one example of a curse in action, but it should demonstrate the design principles behind the mechanic.

  • Trapped Chests
  • Deadly Obsession
  • Dark Fervor
  • Sincere Offerings
  • Blurred Vision
  • Sulfurous Barrels
  • Bloodlust
  • Dancing Flames
  • Creeping Gloom
  • Torch of Sorrow

New Weapons and Relics

Two Cursed Weapons

  • Fulmination, Death's Rampart - Parrying reflects projectiles
  • Annihilation, Bow of Madness - Perfect Shots explode on impact in a Dark blast, dealing damage to ALL characters around

One Regular Weapon

  • LeMat Grape Shot Revolver - Perfect Shots deal damage to all targets in a cone behind the impact

Two Cursed Relics

  • Accursed’s Codex - +50% to all weapons’ base damage, +50% to all damage taken
  • Glyph of Darkness - Level +1 on Cursed weapons

The Cursed Temple update is the first major addition to Curse of the Dead Gods, with many more planned in the future, some as early as next month as indicated by the roadmap below.
