Steam Universe Expanding Part Three: Steam Controller

Steam Machine

In the third and final scheduled announcement by Valve, the company have revealed the Steam Controller, designed to work with every PC game in the Steam catalogue.

Yes, that's right, the Steam Controller will work with every single game:

The Steam Controller is designed to work with all the games on Steam: past, present, and future. Even the older titles in the catalog and the ones which were not built with controller support. (We’ve fooled those older games into thinking they’re being played with a keyboard and mouse, but we’ve designed a gamepad that’s nothing like either one of those devices.)

The Steam controller promises a number of features, specifically built with the PC gamer in mind, including: -

  • Dual trackpads
  • Haptic feedback
  • Touchscreen
  • A total of 16 buttons
  • Mouse and Keyboard emulation

The new controller will be put through a limited Beta trial, which will actually be the same trial as that for the Steam Machines, which we detailed in our last news post.

No doubt there will be outcry and disappointment for those who were hoping for a Half Life 3 announcement, or similar. However, in Valve's defense they give a pretty blatant clue in the Steam Machines announcement: -

Am I going to be using a mouse and a keyboard in the living-room?
If you want. But Steam and SteamOS work well with gamepads, too. Stay tuned, though - we have some more to say very soon on the topic of input.

Sorry guys, you can hardly claim to have been misled!.

Looks interesting, bet its weird at first but defiantly seems a much better compromise than a standard controller

Will get one once I have Steam OS installed on my Media box and will report back

When I'm inevitably chosen for the Steam Machines beta I'll let you know what it's like.
