Steam Universe Expanding Part Two: Steam Machines

Steam Machine

As part of a string of scheduled announcements by Valve over the past few days, the company has just revealed multiple different devices that will run on the new SteamOS. Whilst multiple devices are to become available, each one will be manufactured by a different company, ensuring that everyone will be able to find a device suited to their own needs.

In addition to this, Valve also announced a beta program to run later in the year that will test its own ‘Steambox’. The prerequisites for having a chance to enter the beta are as follows:

  • Join the Steam Universe community group

  • Make 10 Steam friends

  • Create a public Steam Community profile

  • Play a game using a gamepad in Big Picture mode

All of the above must be completed by the 25 October to be in with a chance to be a beta tester. In addition, Valve have stated the following:

"The specific machine we're testing is designed for users who want the most control possible over their hardware. Other boxes will optimize for size, price, quietness, or other factors."

The company have also stated that each machine will be compatible with both keyboard/mouse inputs and gamepads. It remains to be seen if gamepad support will include existing controllers or whether the machine will come with its own unique device.
